Background of the Study

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, sleep disturbances, and cognitive dysfunction. It is often associated with heightened sensitivity to pain and can be accompanied by other symptoms such as depression and anxiety (Wolfe et al., 2024). Despite being a common disorder, fibromyalgia is often underdiagnosed or misdiagnosed due to its complex nature and the overlap of symptoms with other conditions (Martin et al., 2023). Nurses, as key healthcare providers, play an essential role in the management of fibromyalgia through early detection, symptom management, patient education, and providing emotional support.

At Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, a major healthcare institution in southwestern Nigeria, fibromyalgia presents a significant challenge due to limited awareness and knowledge of the condition among healthcare providers. The lack of proper training on fibromyalgia may lead to delayed diagnoses and inadequate management, leaving patients to cope with their symptoms without adequate support. Nurses’ awareness and management of fibromyalgia are crucial for improving outcomes and ensuring that patients receive the proper care and interventions.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the growing recognition of fibromyalgia as a prevalent and debilitating condition, nurses at Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital may not be adequately equipped to manage patients with fibromyalgia due to insufficient awareness and understanding of the disorder. This gap in knowledge may lead to poor patient outcomes and unnecessary suffering. It is essential to evaluate nurses’ awareness of fibromyalgia and their practices in managing the condition to improve care quality and patient satisfaction.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess nurses' awareness of fibromyalgia and its management at Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital.
  2. To evaluate the nursing interventions used in the management of fibromyalgia patients at the hospital.
  3. To identify challenges faced by nurses in managing patients with fibromyalgia.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of awareness among nurses at Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital regarding fibromyalgia and its management?
  2. How do nurses manage patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia at the hospital?
  3. What challenges do nurses face in managing fibromyalgia patients?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses at Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital have adequate awareness of fibromyalgia and its management.
  2. Nurses at the hospital effectively manage patients with fibromyalgia using appropriate interventions.
  3. There are significant challenges faced by nurses in managing fibromyalgia patients at the hospital.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on registered nurses working in the rheumatology, pain management, and general care units at Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital. The scope will include assessing their knowledge and practices related to fibromyalgia management. Limitations may include response biases and the exclusion of other healthcare providers, such as rheumatologists or pain specialists, who may also be involved in the care of fibromyalgia patients.

Definitions of Terms

  • Fibromyalgia: A chronic condition characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, and other symptoms such as sleep disturbances and cognitive dysfunction.

  • Management: The nursing interventions used to alleviate symptoms and improve the quality of life for fibromyalgia patients, including pain management, patient education, and emotional support.
  • Barriers: Factors such as insufficient training, limited resources, or lack of awareness that prevent effective management of fibromyalgia.
